Rotary Cruise on the Kalamazoo Fundraiser

Such fun was had on this sternwheeler cruise down the channel to Lake Michigan. Funds raised wil go toward the cost of the 4th of July fireworks, sponsored by the Rotay Club of Saugatuck-Douglas. Maryjo and Wally are on Ox-Bow's board. They shared information on this summer's events, programs, and faculty. Using a mysterious 'Oxbox' members were invited to remove an item from the box and guess what it might be. All the studios on Ox-Bow's campus were represented from the glass studio to metals and print making.

Larissa Hunt, Lake Michigan College

Larrisa Hunt, Advantage Coordinator at Lake Michigan College spoke to the Rotary Club of Saugatuck Douglas about Lake Michigan College's new Dual Enroll in the Allegan Advantage! program. The Allegan Advantage! is an early college initiative where high school juniors and seniors coming to the Tech Center each day attend college classes taught by Lake Michigan College faculty. Students earn both high school and college credit simultaneously for their coursework. This is a brief clip from the beginning of her talk.

"Wildcat" Banks of Singapore and Allegan Michigan

Larry Ladenburger and our own Jack Sheridan gave a presentation on the "wildcat" banks that were part of the Allegan & Singapore landscape during the mid-19th century. These independent banks were chartered under state law and could issue their own private currency -- often with wild results! Sarvin is a multi media, Iranian born artist now living in Chicago (and calling Saugatuck home on weekends). On January 22, 2015, she shared stories about her home country, her move to Chicago, and her current exhibition "Silk Road" which opened at the Saugatuck Center or the Arts January 15th.

Past President Mark VanderLeek is shown here presenting a check for $1,305.00 to Keith Hayward for Benjamin's Hope. Hayward is on the Board of Directors of Benjamin's Hope and also a Saugatuck Douglas Rotary Club member. The Rotary Club gives a donation to a member recommended non-profit serving Allegan County each quarter. In addition to funds donated from the club kitty, individual members also contribute.

The S-D Rotary Club funded "Little Free Library" has been placed in the Old School House garden. This was one of our quarterly local charities selections. Anyone can take a book and return a book.

Julie is a professional with Wolverine Worldwide based here in Grand Rapids. Interestingly, she has been to Batay 106 in the Dominican Republic, as a volunteer. The Saugatuck Douglas Rotary Club will once again sponsor the 1pm Fourth of July parade through downtown Saugatuck & BBQ in Beery, Field, Douglas. The Rotary Club Fourth of July parade will begin in front of Saugatuck High School (gather at noon if you're going to be in the parade). The theme is Anchors Aweigh!

This Year's Grand Marshall is Marilyn Starring, Saugatuck's Citizen of the Year! EVERYONE is encouraged to participate either with a float, car, or other motorized vehicles. Or just WALK the parade route and have fun!
