Benevolence Committee

In 2014, the Saugatuck Douglas Rotary Club instigated the Benevolence Committee. The purpose of the local charities fund is to provide the flexibility for member-directed club giving throughout the course of the year, often with a matching component to multiply the the effect of the fund. Examples of this include donations to non-profits from need-based charities, pet rescue, community recreation, and assistance for survivors of domestic violence.

In addition to one cycle of member solicited proposals each quarter, there are certain community events to which many members may already be contributing, and a Rotary participation is a part of our being "good neighbors". Examples might be "Sparkle Lights" at Christmas Time, Christian Neighbors food pantry and the Venetian Festival Fireworks in August.

Fourth of July Parade & Fireworks

Fourth of July Chicken BBQSince 2013, the Rotary Club of Saugatuck Douglas has sponsored a Fourth of July Community celebration. This was the combination of the parade, a food tent, and fireworks.

Each year the parade has a theme and has grown larger, all community members and encouraged to join the parade. The fireworks has also grown larger and last almost 1/2 hour and makes for a beautiful display over Lake Kalamazoo.

EVERYONE is encouraged to participate either with a float, car, or other motorized vehicles. Or just WALK the parade route and have fun!

In 2017, a hot dog, brat, chips and cold water tent was set up in the parking lot next to The Butler Pantry on Butler Street. Our special 'Rotary Dog' included grilled peppers and onions and a chipotle drizzle. It was a hit! Proceeds go towards the fireworks and local charities.

Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 10PM.

Questions concerning the events can be directed to Howard Rochte or Mark VenderLeek
